Authentic 19th Century Martin 1857 guitar replica for Minstrel music and Civil War enthusiasts and reenactors, available with imitation gut strings (note: the bracing of this accurate replica is only suitable for imitation or real gut strings). We can get you genuine gut strings if you want them. Either a wooden period coffin case or wool-lined genuine oilcloth (canvas treated with purified linseed oil) guitar case is available.
We have written a number of posts recently on our Adventurous Muse blog, which discusses the authenticity, or rather lack thereof, of many of the musical instruments used by Civil War and other mid-19th Century musician reenactors. The most extreme historic anachronisms are in the realm of mandolins and guitars. The mandolins and guitars of today bear little resemblence to an 1850s/1860s mandolin or guitar.
We are here to help you with a period appropriate guitar at any rate at a reasonable price (mandolins are another matter, which we are addressing). This guitar is an actual meticulously-crafted replica of an 1857 Martin, using the original blueprints.
This instrument is only available strung with imitation gut (similar to classical guitar strings), as the original 19th Century Martins were gut-strung. Despite its appearance, this is NOT a classical guitar.
A period "coffin" case, made in our own workshops in Roswell, GA and Helena, AL is available at a special price if purchased with this instrument.
