The Rickert Mountaineer III Backpacker Fiddle is a really skinny (but full 4/4 length) travel fiddle that is extremely durable for the most punishing environments.

The Mountaineer III has an innovative Dov Schmidt tailpiece/chin rest combination. To find out more about this unique device, see our article about the Tailpiece-Chin Rest Combination from Dov Schmidt. No longer does the musician have to fool with removing the chin rest in order to fit the instrument into it a round case, only to have to re-install the chin rest in order to play it. There is a another NEW chin rest available, which is described below.

The instrument is just 2" wide and is standard 4/4 length (body just under 14" and total length about 23"). The instrument is fit with Wittner internally-geared planetary pegs (i.e. Wittner Fine-Tune pegs).

The NEW standard configuration is a Shoulder Pad for Travel and Backpacker Violins and center-mount chin rest modified specifically to the instrument. The Mountaineer utilizes an innovative internal bracing to perform the functions of the bass bar and the sound post. The advantage is that the Mountaineer II can withstand shock and extreme temperatures without the risk of the bass bar becoming unglued or the sound post falling out of place.
