ATTENTION!: You most likely got to this page via a search engine rather than visiting the Adventurous Muse Storefront. This is an obsolete instrument that is superceded by a new custom-made model, which is available ONLY at our new store, Don Rickert Musical Instruments (www.RickertMusicalInstruments.com).

Attention: There is only one more of these instruments, which is fit with antique-type geared tuning machines and the newest version of the Rickert Adjustable Shoulder Rest Adaptor. The instrument model will be retired after the last one is sold.

The Neil Gow 21C2 Travel Violin,
while being a very modern instrument, is based on our extremely popular Neil Gow Pochette, an interpretation of an 18th Century pochette (pocket fiddle or kit) on display in the Burrell Museum in Glasgow, Scotland. The 18th Century Neil Gow Pochette, in addition to being charming and beautiful, sounds wonderful. In fact, it has been chosen to be part of Pochette and Kit exhibit at Ringve - the Norwegian National Museum of Musical Instrument.

Typical of the many comments we recieve on the Neil Gow pochette's sound is the one below, which was posted on YouTube.

Wow - that sounds great ! To my understanding, this size/style of instrument usually doesn't have much of a bass response - but this one does. Some luthier magic there (and a good player too)!

The new Neil Gow 21C2, which it looks like the historic reproduction instrument, is different in many ways.

New standard configuration is a Shoulder Pad for Travel and Backpacker Violins and center-mount chin rest modified specifically to the instrument. View photos of the new Travel and Backpacker Violin Shoulder Pad, which was designed by Sherry Fuqua-Gilson in collaboration with Don Rickert Design.

If you stick with standard configuration, the instrument fits into either of our new square cases without having to remove the chin rest:

The Rickert Adjustable Shoulder Rest Adaptor for Travel and Backpacker Violins is now an easily-installed option. View photos of the new version (Gen 4) of the Rickert Adjustable Shoulder Rest Adaptor.

There are also other important differences that make it sound even better than its predecessors, such as a tweaked bass bar and a Sitka Spruce (eco-certified reclaimed) top, known for its deep powerful timbre. Finally, the new Neil Gow 21C2 comes with the incredible Wittner Fine-Tune (internal planetary-geared) tuning pegs.

The Sound

The incredible full-bodied sound and projection volume of the Neil Gow 21C2 is conveyed in the sound sample below:
