There are only 3 of these special edition authentic Civil War cigar box fiddles left. Special Festival Pricing through September 2011!
This instrument is perfect for Civil War reenactors, as it is close to the authentic instruments crafted and played by both Confederate and Union soldiers. It has dimensions similar to a regular fiddle and fits in a modern violin case (included) if desired. We can make you a custom wooden "coffin case" or you may want to build such as case yourself. The instrument comes in a felt bag...we can make you an authentic oil-cloth (linen saturated with purified linseed oil and then sun-dried) outer. The inner felt bag with an oil-cloth outer bag for weather protect would be the most authetic "on-the-march" case.
Our antique reproduction cigar box fiddles are extremely loud and powerful. They are made from solid Spanish Cedar, with a Western Red Cedar top. This instrument is set up for authentic re-enactment with a few 20th Century conveniences such as modern imitation gut strings and fine tuners on the tailpiece. The strings are Corelli Alliance, regarded as among the synthetic core strings with the most realistic "feel" and sound of real gut strings. The fiddle has traditional ebony tuning pegs (note: the picture shows a model with metal friction pegs...we will correct the photos ASAP).
For the Authentic Campaigner, we will leave off the fine tuners and string the instrument with genuine 1860s type pure gut strings. For modern playing convenience, the ebony pegs can be upgraded to Wittner Fine-Tune internally-geared planetary pegs, which look just like regular ebony pegs. With the Wittner tuning peg upgrade, fine-tuners on the tailpiece are NOT needed (the Wittner pegs are THAT accurate), making for a much more authentic-looking 1860s style cigar box fiddle.
The 1860s-Style Cigar Box Fiddle should also be played with at least an intermediate-quality wooden bow. The George Werner bows that we sell are a perfect choice, as well as a refurbished vintage bow.
