Note: The price is that for the base instrument ONLY. You select components and options. The final price will be higher...sort of like buying a Dell Computer
THIS INSTRUMENT IS AVAILABLE NOW!
The Series 4 Electric Violin by Don Rickert Design is a "chambered" or semi-hollow body instrument that is designed to accommodate with one or two pickups, with separate volume control for each pickup, allowing you to get just the right balance. It features a Fender guitar-style bolt-in neck with angle adjustment (with shim washers, just like an electric guitar) and an optional variable internal damping mechanism designed specifically for this instrument.
This is one of several instruments designed by Dr. Don Rickert (a custom version, of course) that are being used for the Active Acoustics (a new kind of synthesizer) project directed by Dr. Dan Overholt (inventor of the Overtone Violin) at Auberg University at Copenhagen and Stanford University.
The Series 5 Electric Violin by Don Rickert Design is a hybrid between a "skeletal" electric violin, such as the Yamaha Silent Violin series but also with a full top and back plate. The violin combines ancient design elements with an “industrial” look. The arched top is formed Sitka spruce (cold bent in two directions using a proprietary technique) rather than carved.

Don Rickert’s newest musical instrument creation is the Rickert Series 6 XS Electric Violin. It is a small instrument (slightly larger than a pochette) with a standard 4/4 scale length. It uses the Rickert Adjustable Shoulder Rest (priced separately) and a small over-the-tailpiece type chin rest.
Specifics:
The sound box of the Rickert Series 6 XS Electric Violin is very similar to the Rickert Mountaineer Backpacker Fiddle. It has highly-resonant Western Red Cedar sides without a bass bar or sound post but, rather, special internal bracing that performs the function of those components. The top is Sitka Spruce (reclaimed, of course) and the back is Curly Maple. While the top is glued, the back is screwed on to allow easy removal for installing electronic components. The neck utilizes a unique bolt-on system, which allows it to be raised and lowered in order to change the string height.
Fiddlers: Tired of being a musical anachronism at reenactments?
All 5 parts of our free online course are available NOW: How to Set Up Your Fiddle 1860s Style (of particular interest to Civil War Reenactors). This course, brought to you by the Adventurous Muse Store, Musicians' Sutlery and Old Mill Musical Instruments is available in 5 parts on YouTube.
This fiddle is on the cusp between a high-end intermedite instrument or a entry-level master instrument. It has the overall look of one of our Master-level fiddles, but with an incredibly affordable price (under $1,000)
The fiddle is a Stradivarius pattern with a modern setup for advanced amateur or professional performance in just about any genre. We set the string height and the degree of bridge arch the way you want it, and string it with Helicore Medium Gauge (powerful and bright) or Thomastik-Infeld Vision Synthetic Core strings (powerful, full-bodied and dark). The select spruce top is graduated to Stradivari specs. The back, ribs and neck are nicely flamed maple. The fingerboard is select ebony.
We expertly varnish the instrument with oil varnish. The color is very traditional golden brown (a medium brown with amber dye in the mix). is The varnish is applied by hand in the traditional manner; not sprayed!
Note: The listed price is for a simple inkwork decoration. Actual cost will usually be much greater.
The decoration of musical instruments has been done for hundreds of years. Such decoration has included inlay work of various types, painting, etching, carving, application of gold leaf and "rosing", the Norwegian nickname for "rosemaling", which is the tattoo-like inkwork one sees on Hardanger Fiddles.
We are able to apply just about any design imaginable to your instrument. The varnish is applied OVER the design, making it about as permanent as a tattoo on a person.
The LAST regular production Travel Master has left our studio/workshop. This instrument is only available on a custom-build basis
All cedar version of the Rickert Travel Master Pochette, using waterproof glues and finishes that are also resistant to wide variations in temperature and humidity. Very nice acoustic power and bass overtones.
About a year and a half ago, Dr. Rickert, did a design study of just how simple one could make a pocket fiddle, also known as a pochette and still get a decent sound with good playability. The outcome was a prototype of a pochette-sized instrument made from half of a whiskey or wine bottle box. Think of it as a really skinny cigar box fiddle. The body is made of basswood (linden) and the top is good spruce tone wood. It played and sounded amazingly good.
Anyway, we made a video of Darci Jones playing a tune called "The Bright Hollow Fog" and it has gotten about 10,000 viewings on YouTube, and more positive commentary than any other instrument we make. We have not made a production version of the Whisky Bottle Box Pochette until now.
